Biography
Joachim Brackx was born in Oostende (Belgium) in 1975. He studied composition at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Ghent with Godfried-Willem Raes and concentrated on experimental music involving electronics and computers.
During his studies he collaborated on a project by Hervé Thys for research around a new musical pedagogy based on free improvisation. He developed special software for this project that is still in use now in France and Switserland.
As a composer he has recieved numerous commissions from several ensembles and institutions, such as v.z.w. de Verenigde Cultuurfabrieken, het Goeyvaerts Consort, Champ d'Action, Spectra Ensemble, the Logos Foundation, Happy New Ears, Stichting Muzaïk, the University of Leuven (K.U.L), the Spiegel String Quartet, Klopvis and STUK.
He was teacher of composition at the "Hogeschool Gent, Departement Muziek en Dramatische Kunst" since 1998, year of his graduation as a Master of Composition, until 2003.
As a live-electronics specialist he has collaborated in several new music ensembles like Champ d'Action, leading ensemble for contemporary music in Belgium, where he was also Young Composer in Residence during the year 2000 after winning a composition contest under the supervision of Klaus Huber.
He worked for the Logos Foundation, a concert organisation for contemporary and experimental music, from 1997 to 2001. He was also a part of the Logos Ensemble and the Logos Trio. As a vocal performer he played with this Trio in countries such as Poland, Germany, Indonesia and the United States.
From 2001 to 2003 he gave lectures about new music at the Musicology Department of the K.U.L. (University of Leuven).
Next to composition his main activities are ensemble singing and radio making. He has toured with several internationaly acclaimed professional choirs like the Capella Currende (E. Van Nevel) and the Collegium Vocale (P. Herreweghe).
The VRT (flemish radio and television) hired him in 2002 to make radio programmes for Klara, their classical and cultural station.
